Master Bedroom Makeover

It’s time to tackle the master bedroom in the Kiwi Living house, and Melissa and Dion are keen to create a tranquil space that's free from distractions.

DIY Timber Headboard

Buying headboards can be expensive, but this project is cost effective and a simple way to transform your bedroom.

  • 1x sheet 18mm x 1200mm x 2400mm MDF
  • 150mmx18mm no 1 dressed pine 8m length
  • 60mmx18mm no 1 dressed pine 5m length
  • Pva glue
  • 30mm finishing nails
  • 100 grit sandpaper

 Tools required:

  • Electric skill saw/drop saw
  • Finishing gun
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Hammer

 How to:

  • Cut MDF 200mm longer than the width of bed and use the full 1200 and lay down on a flat workable surface (the width of bed we are using is 1550 mm).
  • Cut 2 pieces of 150mm pine at 1750mm and glue and nail to top and bottom of sheet of MDF. Cut 4 pieces at 900mm glue and nail spaced evenly in between.
  • Using the 60mm pine, mitre, glue and nail across top and sides of head board.  This will create a nice chunky boarder. Remember to hang the boarder past the MDF 10mm, this will allow to pack for any skirting. You can scribe and trim out for skirting when you fit headboard.
  • Sand all sharp edges, fill nail holes, now ready to paint.

Floating Bedside Tables

  • 250mmx18mm no 1 pine x 3m length
  • Pva glue
  • 50mm finishing nails
  • 40mmx 40mm x 2mm zinc angle brackets and screws

How to:

  • Make 2 square boxes - cut 2 pieces at 300mm and 2 pieces at 264mm glue and nail to create a square box.
  • Sand all sharp edges, fill nail holes, now ready to paint.
  • Locate solid fixing in the wall if possible and position and screw angle brackets to the back inside of box. They can be then screwed to the wall if no solid wall fixing you may need to use a gib board wall anchor.
