It's easy to see the attraction to detoxes - they're viewed as a quick fix with strict rules that will absolve us of our lifestyle sins and claim to rid your body of toxins, flush your system of impurities, help you lose weight, boost your energy levels and leave you feeling rejuvenated. But as Monty discovered this week, thanks to Healthy Food Guide nutritionist Claire Turnbull, there's no credible scientific evidence to demonstrate that detox kits 'remove toxins' or offer any long term health benefits. "Biologically, they don't make sense because our bodies detox naturally and are far more efficient at removing waste and toxins than any detox plan."
Our bodies have their own complex and sophisticated built-in 'detoxifiers' - made up of our skin, kidneys, lymphatic system, gastrointestinal system and liver - and any toxins we do consume are broken down and excreted and this process of filtering out, breaking down and excreting waste products happens constantly.
