Tony’s Take on Lawn Alternatives and Sowing Lawns

Autumn has arrived, but before you head inside to keep warm, keep in mind that now is the perfect time to sow a new lawn.

As we discovered in this week's segment, autumn provides the perfect opportunity to sow a new lawn. However, if you're after a more unique look, why not try planting some, (or all) of your lawn with the alternatives below?

Selleria (Native)

  • This plant is flush to the ground and suitable to plant in North, South, and Stewart Islands.
  • Can tolerate sun or part shade.
  • Fleshy leaves, which grow 2-3cm high.
  • Survives well on minimal water once established, can be watered with sea-water-(sea water would keep weeds down too).
  • Will grow in very shallow soil - as little as 5cm, so ideal for between pavers.
  • Grows in a wide range of soil types from clay to sand to boggy soils.
  • Is tolerant of regular traffic wear, including the occasional vehicle.
